From the Beginning...The Union Gospel Mission was the answer to the prayers of the men of the "Christian Businessmen Breakfast Club" that met in the Coffee Shop of the Travis Hotel located in downtown Dallas. The had club met for breakfast and a devotional service for the previous 15 years. Though the men of the club represented Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Assembly of God, and Independent Bible Churches, all of them had one thing in common. Their beliefs were based on the Word of God and their individual personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Included in this group of businessmen were some of Dallas' outstanding citizens like Arthur A. Everts, the most prominent jeweler in Dallas, John E. Mitchell, Jr., the President of the John E. Mitchell Company, and Rev. Frederick P. Billings, an evangelist and the Vice-President of the Dallas Bible Institute. Also, Brother W. E. Hawkins, the founder and speaker of "Radio Revival," a very popular Christian Radio Program at the time, figured in the early days and founding of the mission. These men had been praying for a strong evangelical witness that would be located in downtown Dallas to reach out with the Gospel message and provide hot meals, clothing and shelter for the less fortunate that wandered the streets of Dallas' Skid Row. The Mission would be a place where they could be told of God's love for them and His power to save, through the shed blood and finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ.
