Dallas, Texas – September 1, 2020 – William Thompson, known at Calvary Bible Church and Union Gospel Mission (UGM) Dallas as “Brother Bill”, served the homeless in Dallas since 1983 and as the Executive Director of Union Gospel Mission Dallas from 1988 to 2017 when God called him to his eternal home.
Recently, UGM Dallas was blessed to receive a $200,000 gift from Brother Bill’s flock at Calvary Bible Church. What makes this donation especially meaningful is that many of the homeless men and women Brother Bill led to the Lord and ministered to as they grew in their faith are now giving back to the organization that was there to support them during their season of need. These men and women, who are now giving back, epitomize the words found in Luke 12:34 that says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
The current CEO of UGM Dallas, Mr. Bruce J. Butler worked closely with Brother Bill during his time on the board and the two were good friends for more than 20 years. Mr. Butler commented, “Brother Bill’s legacy has continued as have the fruits of his labors for the Lord. This group of disciples from Calvary Bible Church are truly paying it forward so the Dallas area homeless can continue to receive nourishment for the body and the soul.

About the Union Gospel Mission Dallas
Established in 1949, Union Gospel Mission Dallas (the Mission) has been restoring lives through the Word of Jesus Christ. This faith-based nonprofit organization supports individuals and families experiencing homelessness with shelter, food and clothing, as well as a Discipleship and recovery program, vocational job training and development, state-licensed child care services, medical care, transportation, substance abuse prevention, and transitional and permanent housing.
In 2019 the Mission assisted individuals in Dallas County by providing more than 194,749 nights of shelter and serving 586,551 meals. UGM Dallas also houses 160 veterans in our men’s shelter each month who were previously homeless. Forty-five percent of the clients who received service from UGM Dallas were first -time clients. These men, women and children represent the living, breathing embodiment of the grace of change, and the Mission is committed to doing everything possible to transform lives and end homelessness one person at a timer.
